Yesterday, Georgia Gun Owners’ Stand-Your-Ground legislation (HB-1226) was heard in the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee here in Atlanta.
This is one of our top priority bills for the 2026 session, and the stakes could not be higher.
HB-1226 strengthens Georgia’s Stand-Your-Ground law by:
👉 Granting gun owners the presumption of innocence in the wake of a self-defense shooting, as 18 other states have done.
👉 Establishing a pre-trial immunity hearing, allowing gun owners to assert Stand-Your-Ground protections before being dragged through months or years of prosecution.
👉 Ensuring there must be probable cause before a gun owner can be arrested following a self-defense incident — ending the practice of arresting innocent people ‘just because.’
As expected, radical Democrats fought hard to crush this bill.
They invented one wild hypothetical scenario after another, desperately trying to justify arresting and prosecuting law abiding gun owners who acted in self-defense.
But Georgia Gun Owners was there to fight back.
I personally testified before the committee, explaining why gun owners must be protected from politically motivated prosecutions.
And Butts County Sheriff Gary Long also testified, explaining why this bill is necessary to protect innocent citizens who are forced to defend themselves.

Because of your support and the pressure from gun owners across Georgia, the committee advanced HB-1226 on a voice vote.
This is a major victory, but this is just the beginning.
There will be amendments offered to strengthen the bill even further, and the full House will soon have the opportunity to vote.
We must act now to ensure lawmakers know that Georgia gun owners demand passage of HB-1226.
