Disturbing news coming out of the Capitol in Atlanta.
In past few days I spoke to dozens of legislators, staffers and Capitol insiders in Atlanta.
As is usually the case when there’s a high profile shooting, Republicans tend to cower in the corner, fearful of what the media might say about them.
And in many cases, they believe appeasing the gun-grabbers will somehow protect our Second Amendment rights.
They couldn’t be more wrong.
Over the years Georgia Gun Owners has fought back against expansion of databases that can be used to deny individuals their Second Amendment rights.
Time and time again, government fails in stopping bad guys from doing bad things, but politicians always propose giving government more power.
Just as I expected, in my conversations yesterday at the Capitol, I heard rumors of Republicans “looking into” expansion of “mental health” databases and even “Red Flag” legislation.
Don’t get me wrong, no one wants a mad man with a gun.
But if you’ve ever read the horror stories from individuals seeking to get their name removed from a government gun ban list, you know it’s virtually impossible, and always very expensive.
That’s why it’s so disturbing to hear Republicans talk about “red flag” legislation.
In a nutshell, “red flag” legislation would allow friends, family, neighbors, etc. to “turn you in” and request a judge temporarily take your firearms.
No adjudication, no due process.
This is dangerous to say the least.
Only five states have such laws, but it’s now one of the hot so-called “solutions” gun-grabbers are pushing all across the country.
You and I both know such a system would be abused AND expanded, and recovery of your rights and firearms difficult to get back.
At the end of the day, anti-gunners want to ELIMINATE the Second Amendment and CONFISCATE your firearms.
That is the end game — never lose sight of that.
Giving them something they want would never satisfy their appetite, only embolden them to take even more of our cherished Second Amendment rights away.
Today is Day 24 of 40 of the 2018 meeting of the Georgia General Assembly.
You have my word that Georgia Gun Owners will fight any scheme to shred the Second Amendment at every opportunity.
I will caution you there are “establishment” gun organizations who DO WHAT THEY ARE TOLD by Republican leadership in Atlanta.
They will bend over backwards to compromise or trade rights away just to get a “win”.
The Second Amendment is not negotiable in our eyes here at GGO.
